Pick up hair from under...
Pick up some hair from a bit further down the main section, and add it to the working strand.  This should be the strand that you are about to bring up to the middle.  As you reach under to grab that strand, grab some loose hair along with it, and include it as you go.  Somehow, some people grab hair and add it to one of the outer strands because this is more comfortable for them.  So long as you're reaching from under and bringing hair up, you're doing fine.  Just make sure you do it the same way every time.
